The Fan Museum is the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to the history of fans and to the art of fan making. It is housed in beautifully restored 18th century townhouses in the centre of Historic Greenwich, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has received awards from the National Art Collections Fund and the British Tourist Authority for its outstanding contribution to the arts and tourism. It has been described as ""an oasis of tranquillity"" and ""an artistic and architectural gem"".
Collections held by The Fan Museum now include over 3000 fans and fan leaves from all over the world, spanning over nine centuries. These collections in addition to fans lent to museums and private collectors are displayed in changing exhibitions, which concentrate on a particular theme, country or a particular period.
At the rear of the two houses, the elegant Orangery has an enchanting, peaceful atmosphere with hand painted murals showing a romantic panorama of London. The Orangery overlooks a Japanese style garden with a pond, a bridge, and goldfish! It is preceded by a formal French parterre - fan-shaped of course.
The museum provides the perfect setting for group visits, stylish corporate entertainment and private parties as well as for conferences and filming.
