Abbey Road Studios, created in November of 1931 by EMI in London, England is best known as the recording studio used by musicians such as The Beatles, Cliff Richard, Al Stewart, Pink Floyd and The Shadows. The studios are located on Abbey Road, in St John's Wood in the City of Westminster.
Abbey Road Studios is most closely associated with The Beatles, who recorded almost all of their albums and singles there between 1962 and 1970. The Beatles named their final 1969 album, Abbey Road, after the street where the studio is located (the recording studio would only be named Abbey Road after The Beatles record in 1970). The cover photo for that album was taken by Iain MacMillan outside Abbey Road studios, with the result that the pedestrian zebra crossing outside the studio, where the Fab Four were photographed, soon became a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from all over the world. Among the less desirable effects of this notoriety has been the unsightly graffiti written on the studio fence by visitors and the regular theft of road signs.
It's become something of a tradition to walk across the famous Zebra pedestrian crossing in Abbey road in bare feet.
For many years, this crossing has held a fascination among fans of popular music.
THE BEATLES , on Friday the 8th of August, 1969, thought they were just photo-shooting a new LP-cover (thats a Long Play record for anyone under 21). Their efforts spawned yet another tourist attraction to London.
The studios were only named after the road when the Album became a massive bestseller.
Abbey Road Studios is close to Lords Cricket ground.
To get to Abbey Road, depart the Underground at St. John's Wood Station; look to the southwest for Grove End Road, and follow Grove End Road for a few blocks, about ¼ mile. You'll come to a monument on a pedestal, and the famous Abbey Road album cover crosswalk (the markings on the asphalt have changed somewhat since 1969). Belisha beacons (lighted globes on posts) at the zebra crossing are there to warn drivers that this is a popular spot for pedestrians to cross the street.
The closest Underground Station to Abbey Road Studios is St. John's Wood. It is on the Jubilee Line, between Swiss Cottage and Baker Street. It is in Travelcard Zone 2.
